Blackhawks take down Trojans, fall to Eagles

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks split their week with a victory over Drummond at home Jan. 8 and a loss on the road to Valley Christian Jan 9.

The Blackhawks fought hard against the Drummond Trojans throughout the first half. The Trojans were punishing the Blackhawks on the long shots, scoring more than half their points from behind the three-point line. Despite this, the Blackhawks managed to take a razor thin lead into the second half.

The Blackhawks came out strong in the third quarter quickly putting some distance between them and the Trojans and managed to shut down their three-point game entirely in the second half. The Blackhawks held off the Trojans in the final frame to a 69-58 victory.

Sawyer Shelmerdine led the Blackhawks with 20 points followed by Quinlan Ream with 17, Jason James with 12, Chase Haines with 8, Klayton Kovatch with 7 and Oskar Murphy with 5. Ream, James and Murphy scored the Blackhawks' 3 three pointers.

On the road, the Blackhawks faced stiff competition from the Valley Christian Eagles. They hung with the Eagles in the first quarter but the game slowly slipped out of reach for the Blackhawks in the next two quarters. The Eagles took off in the fourth quarter and the Blackhawks fell 43-63.

James scored more than half the Blackhawks points racking up 23 with 4 three-pointers, 4 two-pointers and 3 free throws. Shelmerdine and Ream each had 8 points while Kovatch and Haines had 2 points each.

The Blackhawks face Darby at home and Granite on the road this week Jan. 15 and Jan. 16.
