Lady Blackhawks win District 13C Championship

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks were the top seed going into the District 13C Tournament but the championship was far from a sure bet. Both Granite and Drummond handed the Lady Blackhawks losses during the regular season.

The Lady Blackhawks dominated the first game against the Granite Prospectors, 25-12 Thursday, Oct. 29 at home.

The second game started out in similar fashion with the Lady Blackhawks taking a 12-5 lead but that would soon be erased. The Prospectors dug in, outscoring the Lady Blackhawks 8 to 2 to close the gap and eventually tied it up at 17-17. The teams battled through the rest of the game but the Lady Blackhawks came out on top, 25-23.

In the third game the Lady Blackhawks struck first but couldn't build more than a couple point advantage. Prospectors caught them at 10-10. The Lady Blackhawks momentarily stalled with 10 points letting the Prospectors pass them and run up a four-point lead.

Thankfully for the Lady Blackhawks their stall didn't last long and they were soon back in control of the game. They finished off the Prospectors 25-17 and advanced to the Championship match against the Drummond Trojans, Oct. 31 again at home.

The Lady Blackhawks defeated the Trojans in the first game 25-15. They had a little more trouble in the second game trailing the Trojans at times but eventually came out on top, 25-21.

The Lady Blackhawks learned the last time they met the Trojans that being up two games to zero didn't mean they could coast to a victory. They came out swinging and they were on fire. The only thing the Trojans could do to cool them off was to take timeouts.

The Lady Blackhawks defeated the Trojans 25-16 to win the 13C Championship and earn a spot in the Western C Divisional Tournament this week.

Junior Trista Wendel said the Lady Blackhawks had been working on coverage and coming together as a team during practice all week. The hard worked paid off and defeating two teams the Lady Blackhawks split with during the regular season made the victories extra special.

The Lady Blackhawks' first opponent in the Western C is Lone Peak on Nov. 3. Check the Seeley-Swan High School Activities Facebook page for updates and live streaming of games.
