The book for September’s book chat is “The Island of Sea Women” by Lisa See. It was published in 2019. The story takes place on the small Korean island of Jeju where two best friends, Mi-Ja and Young-sook, come from vastly different backgrounds which becomes impossible to ignore.

The story begins when the two girls begin as baby divers working in the seas with the village’s all-female diving collective known as haenyeo. It is led by Young-sook’s mother and it is a life of excitement and danger. It is how the village makes a living by selling what the divers bring up from the sea such as abalone and octopus.

The book covers many decades and the conflicts and wars that came with them beginning in the 1930s and 1940s with Japanese colonialism to World War II, the Korean War and up to the cell phone era and wet suits for divers instead of the flimsy suits worn in the cold waters at the beginning of the story.

A reviewer said that the story is, “A classic Lisa See story—one of women’s friendships and the larger forces that shape them—“The Island of Sea Women” introduces readers to the fierce and unforgettable female divers of Jeju Island and the dramatic history that shaped their lives.”

The monthly book chat will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. It will be held outside if possible and social distancing will be observed.
