Finding hope in troubled times

Someone once said, if you're not worried you're not paying attention. The apostle John recorded in his gospel, these words: "In this world you will have trouble." John 16:33. And anyone that's paying attention has certainly noticed the world seemingly crumbling before our very eyes.

How then are we to find peace in a world of chaos? First, let's take a look at the words Jesus used preceding His pronouncement that we would find trouble in this world. His warning, "you will have troubles" is preceded by these words: "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone for my father is with me. I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace.

Additionally the words "You will have troubles," are followed with these words: "But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Hebrews Chapter 1, Verse 1 describe faith thusly, "Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."

The important thing to remember about faith is that it is the object of our faith that is most important. And the object of the Christian faith is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Therefore, when God tells us we will have peace amidst the troubles of this world and then assures us it is because He has overcome the world, we regard these words as true and reliable based on our faith in He who spoke them.

The bottom line here is the idea of Divine control. It is in those times that we attempt to be in control that the panic arises. Yet, when the words of Scripture come to mind and we remember that God is in control, we are able to rest in His promises.

Proverbs 3:5-6, 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your path straight."

Often we view God's purpose as our success in a matter. In fact God's purpose may be just the opposite. His true purpose for us is that we depend on Him and His power now (in this moment).
