Swan Song
SWAN VALLEY - Dan Maloughney, 70, of Condon passed away April 30 from a brain hemorrhage. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at later dates.
Born in Butte, Mont. Sept. 9, 1949 he was the youngest of five children of John and Ann Maloughney. From an early age he enjoyed working on anything mechanical and collecting "treasures". He graduated from Butte Central Catholic High School in 1967.
After high school, Dan attended Northern Montana College and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Industrial Education. After graduation he accepted a teaching position at Montana State Prison. This began a 40-year career with the Department of Corrections. Dan was a compassionate soul and believed in redemption and second chances.
Dan moved to the Condon area in 1980. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsmen. The Swan Valley was truly the perfect location for him. He joined the Swan Valley Emergency Services in 1984. He felt it was important to help others and give back to the community. As an EMT he helped many people in their time of need and developed many lifelong friendships along the way.
After retiring Dan was able to dedicate his time to adventures and tinkering. Whether he was in Alaska guiding fishing trips or driving across the country to pick up "treasures," Dan lived his life to the fullest and on his terms. Through all his adventures he was "never lost, just took the long way getting there." He always made his destinations in time, but never on time.
He was a mechanic cowboy that loved working on anything with a motor or hooves. He had a large collection of "treasures" and had two of everything and might be able to find one of them if he looked. In his retirement he also drove school bus. It started out as something to fill his time but kept doing it because he enjoyed being around the kids. "Little Danny" as they called him will be missed.
Dan's sense of humor was one-of-a-kind. He could find the bright side of any situation. He had too many stories to remember and they all made us laugh. The tales he and his brothers tell of growing up in Butte have always made us wonder how they lived so long. Stories of fistfights, accidental fires, hunting trips and Big Foot encounters always made us laugh and wonder if he was pulling our leg. He would always remind us that, "you can choose your friends but not your family." No matter whether you called him Dad, Danny or "UD" he had unconditional love for all his family and friends.
Dan was proceeded in death by his parents John and Ann Maloughney, his sister Nancy Seville and his brother Mickey Maloughney. He is survived by his brothers Pat (Nancy) and Jim (Judy) Maloughney all of Butte; children Shane (Melinda Paul) of Great Falls, Mont., Jack (Kari) of Havre, Mont., Ryan Maloughney of Condon, Nikki (Kiel O'Brien) of Seeley Lake; and his beloved grandchildren, Katelyn, Trenton and Ali Maloughney and Liam and Desler O'Brien.
Memorials may be made in Dan's honor to the Swan Valley Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 1196, Condon, MT 59826.
