Ladies take second, PRs set

ARLEE – For the first time this season, a full Blackhawk team of five girls traveled to Arlee for the Arlee Fish Hatchery Challenge Oct. 10. While the meet in the past has always been for Class B and C schools, this year Class A schools joined the race with strong teams from Hamilton and Ronan. The Lady Blackhawks missed the gold by one point finishing second to Hamilton.

The team knew that this meet would be a challenge on a very difficult course. They were up for it as they set new personal records (PRs) or were very close to past PRs on the course.

Emily Maughan, in her second full race of the season, set a new PR and ran a strong third place behind the top girls from Hamilton and Ronan. Her remarkable time of 20:49.59 beat Gracie Lang of Darby by 11 seconds with a pace time of 6:43 per mile.

Sariah Maughan, a dual athlete, ran her best time of the season finishing in 21:20.51. She placed fifth of 32 and outkicked Sarah Passey of Hamilton by three seconds with a 6:53 mile pace.

Hannah Ayers and Kyla Conley, also a dual athlete took the sixth and seventh spots. Ayers finished five seconds ahead of Conley with a time of 21:52.18, setting a new PR. Conley held a six second lead over Marie Davenport of Hamilton finishing in 21:59.18. She missed her PR by less than a second.

Jayla Kauffman, SSHS's third dual athlete, beat Peyton Haddock of Hamilton by one minute in a time of 28:27.17. She missed her PR by less than six seconds wearing the wrong shoes for the course. She finished 24th in the field of 32 with a 9:11 mile pace.

I'm proud of the girls with this strong showing.

SSHS Boys

The Blackhawk boys team also made a strong showing of PRs on the challenging course.

Chase Haines set a new PR by 12 seconds. He ran a 20:58.44 outdistancing R.J. Knoll of Arlee by 28 seconds. He finished 22nd with a 6:46 pace time.

Levi Reinitz ran a 1:16 PR finishing in 22:13.19. He outdistanced Erich Morigeau of St. Ignatius by 30 seconds. His hard work in practice has been paying off. He finished 26th in the field of 35 with a 7:10 mile pace.

I'm super proud of the team's effort at this meet and they have more to give.

Middle School

Sam Ayers ran the best race of the season. He led the race until the hill when Tucker Huckaba of Hot Springs took the lead. Ayers finished in a strong second of 24 racers in 13:01.23 12 seconds ahead of Clay Rouse of Darby.

The Middle School Boys race included teams from Frenchtown, Bonner, Hot Springs, Darby, St. Ignatius, Arlee and Mission.

The final meet before State Cross Country will be at Linda Vista in Missoula Oct. 15, one day earlier than originally scheduled.
