SEELEY LAKE - The 2019 Seeley Lake Elementary Eagles Volleyball team is part of the Copper League which consists of several A (eighth grade) and B (seventh grade) home and away matches and an eighth grade tournament at the season's end. This season, the Eagles started with 12 players: one eighth grader, three seventh graders, four sixth graders and four fifth graders. We have since grown to 21 players: three eighth graders, three seventh, nine sixth and six fifth graders.
Since we are a young team, we started out focusing on the fundamentals of volleyball. We have been doing a lot of drills to teach basic bumps, sets, attacks and serving and have been doing a lot of reps of each so that doing these becomes like "second nature." We also worked on dives and rolls, court awareness, rotations and much, much more.
Most importantly, we worked on treating people with respect, improving individually and working together as a team. "Be the One" is our motto for the year. You "be the one" to treat others how you want to be treated, to achieve your goals, and to call/get the ball and do your best. You are with yourself all of the time, so "be the one" to talk yourself into knowing you can succeed at what you put your mind to do and then have the courage to do it.
It has been awesome to watch these girls improve each day in their skills and attitudes, develop relationships with each other and get excited about the game. They're constantly working on getting better. We've been told that we "practiced in P.E. class, recess or, even in the hallway at home." And of course, everyone's favorite day is Friday, when our "special guests" come to give tips, demonstrations, and encouragement.
The Eagles have one more home game on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m. Their tournament is on Oct. 12 in Frenchtown. "Be the one" to come and cheer us on and enjoy the fun!!!
We want to thank all the kids and parents and the school staff for the opportunity to coach. We had a blast! We've seen greatness and know there is much more to come! Be the one!
