Horsemen no match for Blackhawks

PLAINS – Coming off their home victory over Darby, the Blackhawks took to the road last week looking for their second win of the season as they faced off against the Plains Horsemen Sept. 6.

The Blackhawks buried the Horsemen in the first quarter. They pounded in three touchdowns and were successful on all three two-point conversion attempts for a 24-0 lead.

By the half the Blackhawks were up 38-6 and they finished the Horsemen off 58-12 by the final buzzer. When the dust settled, they had scored 8 touchdowns and took in 5 two-point conversions.

The Blackhawks had 383 yards total with 204 yards rushing and 179 passing. Owen Mercado completed 11 of 13 passes for all 179 passing yards including 5 touchdowns.

Mercado's main target was Dakota Wood who received 6 passes for 81 yards and 3 touchdowns. Walker McDonald scored on 2 of his 3 receptions and had 75 yards while Avery Smith scored on 1 of 2 receptions for 23 yards.

Smith led the Blackhawks in rushing with 87 yards on 4 carries followed by Mercado with 57 yards on 5 carries. Wood and Caleb Maughan each ran for touchdowns.

On the defensive side, Smith led with 10 solo tackles including 4 tackles for loss and 2 of the teams' 3 sacks. Brice Hawkinson had 5 solo tackles, 2 assists and the other sack.

The Blackhawks are back on the home field this week taking on Arlee Sept. 13 with kickoff at 7 p.m. Arlee is 1-1 on the season winning their opener against Troy 64-18 and losing last week to Charlo 14-28.
