Outdoor Adventure Club kicks off at SLE

SEELEY LAKE - The Outdoor Adventure Club began another season of fun this past week. Program leaders are eager to teach participants how to explore and enjoy the outdoors.

The program is available for children in grades three - eight and runs every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Aug. 15. There is no cost to attend.

“I really like providing an opportunity for a lot of these kids who otherwise wouldn’t be getting [outside] this summer,” said Program Leader Ella Batchelder. “I just think that’s really special.”

The program is led by high school students Batchelder and Eric Lorentz. Both Batchelder and Lorentz previously worked as substitutes in the program, which sparked their interest in leading the program this summer.

“Coming back, I think it’s just great,” said Lorentz. “I want to teach the kids about nature and the outdoors.”

“You can make your own fun,” said Batchelder. “I think that’s not happening as much as it did before and I think it’s good to remind [the children] that you can go outside and have a good time.”

According to Batchelder, Tuesdays and Wednesdays typically include hikes to alpine lakes surrounding Seeley Lake. Thursdays are saved for water sports such as kayaking and paddleboarding on Seeley Lake.

The Outdoor Adventure Program continues rain or shine with rainy day indoor activities at SLE. Activities include the climbing wall and engineering projects.

Children in the program are asked to pack their own healthy lunches with snacks and two bottles of water in a sturdy backpack. It is recommended that children dress in layers, and that clothing and footwear are appropriate for changing weather conditions.
