Bike decorating returns to Seeley Fourth festivities

SEELEY LAKE – Bicycles, wagons and scooters decorated in red, white and blue were seen and heard around Seeley Lake this Fourth of July. Faith Chapel sponsored the decorating event before the parade in the Seeley Lake Community Foundation parking lot. Organizer Margot Wilcox loved giving the children an opportunity to participate in the Fourth of July Celebration by decorating their ride.

For Wilcox, the Fourth of July was one of her fondest memories as a child. She remembers corn on the cob and hot dogs on the grill and decorating her bike with streamers and riding around town.

She has organized the bike decorating in the past along with volunteers from Faith Chapel.

The church provides all the decorations.

"I think the kids in town just need some encouragement and this is just a fun way to do it," said Wilcox. "A lot of them are really creative kids that don't always have that outlet. I think it is a great way to do that. Plus it includes them in the celebration."

Wilcox estimated they had close to 30 children that decorated their bicycles and wagons. There were a few that were staying in a campground that didn't bring their bicycles to town so they were given decorations to take with them. Even a few adults got into the decorating fun adding some flare to their bicycles. One woman decorated her electric scooter.

This year's favorite "decorations" were noisemakers – bells, horns and an empty water bottle mounted to rub on the back tire so everyone can hear the bike coming.

Wilcox said one of the boys told her she needed to bring a whole case of water bottles next year. While they ran out of bells and horns, Wilcox said she looks forward to equipping all of the children next year with "an amazing noise maker."

Wilcox thanked the Community Foundation for allowing Faith Chapel to use their parking lot.

"It was a great central location for the kids and gave them a safe place to drive around to test out the sound of their decorations," said Wilcox.

She also appreciated all the volunteers from Faith Chapel who came and made it such a fun-filled event.
