Powell County Foundation Awards $15,000 in Grants

The Powell County Community Foundation awarded $15,000 in grants during its 2018-2019 grant cycle, helping 17 organizations serving Powell County residents. Since it was established in 1999 the Foundation has given over $187,000 to over 51 non-profits and other groups. Grants ranged from $3,000 for the Deer Lodge Food Pantry and $1,850 for the Powell County Senior Center to $500 to the Ovando School Cultural enrichment Committee for Culinary and Nutrition instruction and $918 to the Garrison School for healthy daily snacks for students.

Other grants were awarded to the Powell County Literacy program, Powell County Ambulance, Toys for Tots, Grant-Kohrs Ranch Foundation for Pumpkin Sunday activities, PCHS Close-Up, ARK After-School program, Rising Star Academy, Deer Lodge Youth Board, Cottonwood Commons, Deer Lodge Preservation, Inc., “Cookin’ on the Clark Fork,” PAWHS for spay and neuter clinics, and the PCHS student council breakfast program.

The Powell County Foundation awards grants in the areas of education, basic human needs, arts and culture, recreation and economic development. The foundation has built a permanent endowment of about $160,000 from donations, memorials, bequests and other planned gifts, and grants are made from the earnings and other funds donated for that purpose. It is affiliated with the statewide Montana Community Foundation. The local board makes the grant decisions and includes Kirk Sandquist, Claudia Dippold, Cheryl Sandquist, Mary Ann Fraley, Gerald Bender and Steve Owens.

Because of IRS regulations all applicants must be 501(c)3 non-profits or government agencies. Deadlines for the next grant cycle will be announced in July. Inquiries and donations to help build the endowment can be directed to P.O. Box 834, Deer Lodge, 59722.
