Swan Valley Community Library Highlights

Swan Valley - The Swan Valley Library summer reading program will begin Monday, June 3 and end Friday, Aug. 30. Participants read and record the book titles on a take-home list available at the library. The participant will receive a prize when the list is returned to the library.

The Swan Valley Library Book Chat will discuss “The Gathering” by Anne Enright on June 5 at 1 p.m. at the Swan Library.

“The Gathering” has been described as a “daring, witty and insightful family epic, clarified through Anne Enright’s unblinking eye. It is a novel about love and disappointment, about how memories warp and secrets fester and how fate is written in the body, not in the stars.”

It is the story of middle-aged Veronica Hegarty who is the middle child of an Irish-Catholic family of nine. It is about the fallout from a tragedy that claims the life of her rebellious older brother Liam. The Gathering won the 2007 Man Booker Prize.

A reader of the book said, “It’s not so much about the story; it’s about the language, the words, the ability to express deep, truthful, savory, layered human experience through poetic labors - that’s what this book is. What a writer. Breathtaking. Bravo, Ms Enright... Bravo!!”

The Swan Valley Library is located on Highway 83 in Condon and is just north and adjacent to the Swan Valley Community Hall. The library is open Mondays and Fridays from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. For more information call 754-2521.
