Seeley-Swan slaughter Lynx, busted by Wardens

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks hosted the Deer Lodge Wardens Feb. 2 and headed to Lincoln Feb. 4 to take on the Lynx in a rescheduled game from Feb. 1.

The Blackhawks got off to a rough start against the Wardens falling 16 points behind by the half. They came out strong in the third quarter nearly matching the Wardens but were unable to gain any ground. Final score was 43-64.

Owen Mercado and Chance Johnson led the Blackhawks scoring 18 and 17 points respectively. The Wardens effectively shackled the Blackhawks' three point game allowing just one from Mercado. Johnson and Mercado punished the Wardens from the foul line with Johnson hitting 7 of 8 and Mercado going 3 for 3.

Also scoring: Cordell Turner 4 and Hunter Shelmerdine 4.

The Lady Blackhawks had a great start against the Wardens keeping pace through the first quarter. The Ladies took off in the second quarter to a 15-10 lead but it was short-lived. The Wardens closed the gap and put the Lady Blackhawks down 8 points by the half.

The Lady Blackhawks struggled in the third quarter and ran into a wall in the final quarter scoring just two free throws while allowing the Wardens 19 points. The final score was 25-57.

Terra Bertsch scored 12 points to lead the Lady Blackhawks. She hit 4 of 5 free throws and 2 three pointers.

Also scoring: Taylor Dillree 3, Kara Good 2, Sariah Maughan 2, Jory Towe 2, Lily Mercer 2, Aspen Conley 1 and Lauryn Barnes 1.

The Blackhawks easily overcame the Lynx. They outscored them more than two to one in the first quarter and blew the game out in the third quarter outscoring the Lynx 27-7. The final score was 91-38.

Mercado scored a whopping 32 points including a half court buzzer beater for three at the half and a second three point buzzer beater at the end. Johnson scored into the double digits with 17 as well as Sawyer Shelmerdine with 10. The Blackhawks hit 12 of 19 free throws.

Also scoring: Turner 9, Lane Mackie-Wendel 8, Dakota Wood 6, Shelmerdine 6 and Chase Haines 3.

The Lady Blackhawks put the Lynx down early as well. By the half they had built 13-point lead and they coasted to the 45-34 victory.

Towe put in a pair of three pointers on her way to 14 points in the game while Bertsch had 12. Autumn Morse also hit a pair of three pointers. The Lady Blackhawks were off on their free throws, hitting only 3 of 8.

Also scoring: Morse 8, Barnes 4, Rose Mercer 3, Good 2 and Lily Mercer 2.

Next week

The Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks host Darby for their final home game of the season Feb. 8 with Senior Night starting at 5 p.m. The teams then head to Victor to take on the Pirates Feb. 9 with JV Girls starting at 1 p.m.
