Seeley Lake Biathlon returns

January 31, 2019

SEELEY LAKE – Saturday, Feb. 2 the Seeley Lake Nordic Ski Club in partnership with the Wilderness Sportsman’s Club will be hosting the Seeley Lake Biathlon at the Seeley Creek Ski Trails. This is the only “Citizens Biathlon” in Montana – no prior biathlon experience is required.

Race Director Dave Batchelder said the Nordic Club acquired the shooting targets from the past organizers last summer and the club is excited to host the event. Next year the club will have more targets and “hopes to establish Seeley Lake as a destination biathlon event in western Montana.”

The biathlon includes three races: the 21K, 9K and the 3K. The 21K starts at 10 a.m. followed by the 9K at 11 a.m. and the 3K at 12 p.m.

Races will be broken into heats based on the number of participants, targets and shooting safety proctors. Categories for the 3K and 9K include Adult and Youth. Categories for the 21K include Adult and Elite. Regardless of the category, the racers will ski a loop, shoot prone, ski a loop, shoot standing, and ski another loop. There is a 150-meter penalty loop for each missed shot. All events are freestyle. There are no separate categories for classic or skate.

Both experienced and non-experienced participants of all ages are welcome. Rifles, ammo and training will be provided for those interested in participating with no prior experience. Gun safety and shooter training for novices is at 8-9:30 a.m. Racers must provide their own ski equipment.

“The Seeley Lake Biathlon is a great opportunity for racers and spectators alike to experience a biathlon in our own backyard,” said Batchelder.

Ribbons and food will be provided to all racers. Proceeds will be used to maintain the ski trails and support the Wilderness Club. For more information visit To register online at or call 406-210-0183. Race-day registration will be in the yurt from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
