SSHS brings winter, fire and snow

SEELEY LAKE – Retired Seeley-Swan High School music teacher Bob Green used the phrase “an awkward situation” to express the condition SSHS found itself in at the beginning of the school year. A small group of students wanted to enroll in choral singing. An even smaller group wanted to enroll in band, but the school had no instructor available to teach either one. The possibility of the traditional winter concert taking place was not even a consideration.

Yet on Dec. 18, an audience filled the auditorium to listen to both choir and band perform. Green had been talked into teaching one more semester of band and SSHS teachers Shauna Anders and Christel Vasko agreed to teach the choir. Likewise, a plea to the community resulted in nine musicians willing to join the five band students and fill in for the missing instruments.

Named for the song “Winter, Fire and Snow,” which the choir sang, the concert contained a selection of familiar holiday carols interspersed with new and unusual pieces designed to highlight the talents of the singers and musicians.
