SSHS basketball season under way

FRENCHTOWN - The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks basketball season began at the Western Class C Tip-off Tournament where they joined dozens of teams to compete Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. The Boys took on Hot Springs and St. Regis while the girls took on Sentinel JV and Hot Springs.

The Blackhawks kept their cool against the Savage Heat of Hot Springs and came out with their first victory of the season. They outscored Hot Springs two to one in the first half and held them off to a final score of 62-54.

Cordell Turner was the Blackhawks high scorer with 18 points followed by Chance Johnson with 16 and Owen Mercado with 15. Hunter Shelmerdine scored 10 and Dakota Wood 3.

The team had 5, three-pointers with Turner and Johnson sinking a pair each and the final one from Mercado. From the free throw line the team was 13 of 20 with Mercado and Johnson each hitting 4 of 5.

The Boys had a similar outcome against St. Regis. They came out strong putting up an 11-point lead by the half and then blew the game out in the third quarter running their lead out to an even 30 points. The final score was 74-51.

Mercado was on fire hitting 8 two-pointers, 3 three-pointers and was 2 for 2 from the free throw line. Not only did he lead the Blackhawks with 27 points, he was one of the top individual points earners in the state that day. Turner pounded in 4 three-pointers on his way to 19 points in the game.

Also scoring: Johnson 11, Shelmerdine 7, Wood 4, Walker McDonald 3, Lane Mackie-Wendel 2 and Sawyer Shelmerdine 1.

The Lady Blackhawks started their season out with a victory as well. The Girls held Sentinel JV to just one basket in the first quarter while putting 10 points on the board for themselves. They extended their lead every quarter of the game to a final of 57-28.

All 14 Lady Blackhawks on the bench saw playing time and 11 of them scored. Terra Bertsch and Ashley Miller led with 11 points each. Bertsch and Aspen Conley each sunk one of the teams' 2, three-pointers. From the foul line the team made 9 of 19 with Sariah Maughan hitting 2 for 2 and Miller 3 for 4 attempted.

Also scoring: Maughan 6, Bethany Hoag 6, Kara Good 5, Conley 5, Chloe Robbins 4, Jory Towe 4, Autumn Morse 3, Jordan Johnson 2 and Rose Mercer 1.

The Lady Blackhawks put up a fight against Hot Springs but slowly slipped behind to a final score of 28-40.

Bertsch led with 12 points while Morse had the team's only three pointer. Bertsch was 4 for 5 from the free throw line and Good was 2 for 2.

Also scoring: Morse 5, Good 4, Robbins 4, Maughan 2 and Miller 1.

This week

The Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks will host Drummond Dec. 7 with JV girls starting at 2:30 p.m.
