Gwen Florio presents "Silent Hearts" at AAI's Open Book Club

SEELEY LAKE - Gwen Florio will be presenting her new book “Silent Hearts” Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Grizzly Claw Trading Company. Alpine Artisans Open Book Club is sponsoring the event. There is no charge for this event and all are welcome.

Primarily set in Afghanistan, this is a story of an American aid worker and an educated Pakistani woman, working as an interpreter, who is still adjusting to her arranged marriage to the son of an Afghani strongman and smuggler.

These two women form a friendship despite their utterly different life experiences and the ever-increasing violence that surrounds them in post-9/11 Kabul. The story is compelling and Florio writes with authority about the poverty, discrimination and danger of that period. There are intensely described scenes of crowded markets filled with cheap merchandise, hordes of street urchins who set upon unwary visitors, and men who believe they have the right to accost women and not all of these men are Afghani.

Florio not only shows life as it was in post 9/11 Kabul but also casts a dispassionate eye towards America as seen by those who bear the brunt of it’s aggression. Her evident familiarity with Afghanistan stems from her time covering the country as a reporter for the Denver Post.

The Open Book Club has been privileged to have Gwen Florio present in the past and we look forward to her appearance this Saturday. Please join us for a most interesting evening.
