Time to apply for Low Income Energy Assistance

A Note from Linda

Happy Fall,

Now that temperatures are dipping it's once again time to apply for Low Income Energy Assistance (LIEAP) and Weatherization!

The State of Montana, through the Department of Public Health and Human Services, offers two programs to help individuals reduce their heating costs. The Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) pays part of winter energy bills for eligible people; and the Weatherization Program helps participants improve the heating efficiency of their homes and thus reduce their energy consumption.

When & Where to Apply

The Low Income Energy Assistance (LIEAP) application is available during the heating season, which is October 1 through April 30 of each year. You can obtain the LIEAP application three ways:

1. Online at https://dphhs.mt.gov/hcsd/energyassistance#717628030-lieap-income-and-resource-guidelines

2. Pick up at the Seeley-Swan Resource Center in the Bison & Bear Center, 3166 MT HWY 83 Seeley Lake MT 59868

3. Call and request or pick up at the District XI Human Resources Council 1801 South Higgins Missoula MT 59801 (406) 728-3710

You may apply for weatherization assistance or an emergency situation with a furnace or water heater at any time during the year also by contacting the District XI Human Resources Council 1801 South Higgins Missoula MT 59801 (406) 728-3710.

Who Is Eligible?

Eligibility for weatherization and fuel (energy) assistance is based on your income and resource limits. For example a 1-person household can have a monthly income of $1,990 or less and resources of $11,394 or less; a 2-person household can have a monthly income of $2,602 or less and resources of $17,098 or less and be eligible.

If your household receives benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program, you may qualify automatically for weatherization and/or fuel assistance.

Both homeowners and renters may apply for these programs.
