Ballot propositions, RV Park at next Council meeting

SEELEY LAKE - The next meeting of the Seeley Lake Community Council promises a full agenda.

The Council will hear proponents and opposing views on all four Ballot Propositions:

LR-128, the proposed levy to support the University system, will be supported by State Senator Tom Facey. At press time the Council is still looking for somebody to take the opposing viewpoint.

LR-129, the prohibition for people to collect other people’s ballots, will be supported by State Representative Mike Hopkins and opposed by Facey.

I-185, the proposed tobacco tax to finance the continuation of Medicaid expansion, will be opposed by Karli Hill of Montanans Against Tax Hikes. At press time no speaker in support has been named, although the group sponsoring I-185 has promised to send a representative.

I-186, the proposal that would put restrictions on mining to prevent pollution will be supported by David Brooks of Trout Unlimited. At press time the Council has not found anybody to speak in opposition.

Council Chair Klaus von Stutterheim said, “We are pleased to bring the pros and cons of the ballot propositions to the Seeley Lake Community, so people can make up their minds on how to vote on them. Together with our spring Candidates Forum we will have covered the entire November ballot.”

Von Stutterheim continued, “While we are still looking for three speakers, we are reasonably confident that by the time of the meeting we will have full coverage of all sides. The most difficult slot to fill is the opposition to I-186. We are hoping that the AFL-CIO will send a representative, but at press time that has not been confirmed. If any of your readers know somebody who can fill any of the open slots, we would be very grateful. Please contact me via e-mail or phone, at the bottom of the release.”

The final major item on the agenda will be the proposed RV Park off Highway 83 and east of Riverview Drive. Developer Brandon Grosvenor will discuss the specifics and is asking for community input.

Like always, there will be an opportunity for public comments on non-agenda items.

The informal part of the meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at the Seeley Lake Historical Museum and Visitor’s Center, 2920 Highway 83, with pizza and water. The formal meeting begins at 6 p.m.
