PRs set at Thompson Falls - Maughan remains undefeated

THOMPSON FALLS – Despite the challenging uphill finish, Seeley-Swan High School junior Jayla Kauffman and freshman Chase Haines set new personal records at the cross country meet in Thompson Falls Sept. 20. Eighth-grader Emily Maughan maintained her undefeated title in the 2-mile Middle School race.

Varsity Boys – 3.1 miles

Freshman Chase Haines make a comeback from a foot problem. He ran a relaxed 7:27 mile pace finishing in 23:07, beating Isaac Fisher of Arlee by 27 seconds. This is a 55 second personal recording placing him 72 out of 91 runners.

Junior Levi Reinitz ran with a strained muscle. He finished in 24:14.09, 1:03 ahead of Dominique Finley of Two Eagle River.

Varsity Girls – 3.1 miles

Freshman Hannah Ayers followed Anya Young, a senior from Bigfork, three-quarters of the race. Anya kicked it in finishing in second place for the Varsity girls, one minute ahead of Hannah who finished in 21:08.93. This was a 6:49 per mile pace and earned her ninth place for the meet.

Junior Jayla Kauffman set a two-minute personal record. She ran a 9:11 per mile pace finishing in 28:29.82, 58th of 83. She beat Shayla Olsen from Polson, Mont. by three seconds and all of the Arlee girls except Cheyenne Pasla.

Middle School Race – 2 miles

Emily Maughan defended her undefeated title by beating Madeline Jellison of Bigfork, Mont. Madeline stayed with Emily two-thirds of the race until Emily established her finishing gear. Her time of 13:00.3 computes to a sparkling 6:30 per mile pace. She finished 24 seconds ahead of Madeline.

Swan Valley School eighth-grader Kyla Conley competed in her first race of the season. She ran a surprising 14:54.99, out kicking Aurora Smith of Libby, Mont. Kyla, who was understandably very nervous before the race but gave it her all finishing ninth out of 46 racers running a 7:27 per mile time. She promptly emptied her stomach as Aurora held her ponytail out of the deluge. What great competitors cross country runners are!

Tia and Tru Good were true to form in their first two-mile race running together for nearly the whole race. Tru managed to beat Tia in previous races to the chute. However, this time Tia decided to use her finishing kick that she'd worked on with rubber bands in practice. Tia finished 21 of 46 in 17:01.20, six seconds ahead of Ashton Earthboy of Ronan, Mont. Tru placed 23 finishing in 17:13.27, beating Laurel Krause from Frenchtown by six seconds.
