MISSOULA – Widespread precipitation and cool temperatures have lessened the fire danger in the Missoula Area to the extent that fire managers are able to lift Stage II fire restrictions Wednesday, Aug. 29 at 12:01 a.m. Stage I restrictions were not implemented this year, so Stage I restrictions will not be in effect on Wednesday. The public is reminded that county bans on open burning persist across most of western Montana.
Agencies rescinding Stage II Restrictions Aug. 29
• MT-DNRC Northwestern Land Office Plains Unit (State Land & Private Land classified “Forested”)
• MT-DNRC Southwestern Land Office Units (State Land & Private Land classified “Forested”)
• MT FWP Sites in Missoula Area
• Lolo and Bitterroot National Forests
• Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes
• BLM Missoula Field Office
• US FWS Refuges and National Bison Range
• Private Land in Mineral, Missoula, Powell and Ravalli Counties
• Private Land in Superior
While fire danger has lessened, fire season in the Northern Rockies is not over. Warm, dry conditions will return to the area by mid-week and fuel moisture content of large diameter material on the forest floor will remain as available fuel for wildfires.
County burn bans remain in effect in Mineral, Missoula, Powell, Ravalli and Sanders counties. They will be lifted only when fire season is over and air quality is favorable. Debris burning is not allowed when a county burn ban is in effect. And, while campfires will be allowed on Wednesday, they should never be left unattended at any time until they are cool to the touch.
