Sunset School Celebrates a Year of Kindness

GREENOUGH - Sunset School celebrated its students' academic achievements and all they had learned at their year-end celebration Friday, June 1.

Toni Hatten, the school's supervising teacher, thanked school board members, the school's staff, the caretaker and the bus company before summing up the school year for the gathered parents by talking about the science experiments, field trips and other activities the students had done.

This included reading "Wonder," a novel by R. J. Palacio. The novel's themes include being kind to others, friendship skills and anti-bullying. A quote from the novel was the theme of the year-end celebration. "When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind."

The event's guest speaker was Sonji Milburn, a reporter at the KECI television station in Missoula. Milburn invited the students of Sunset School to tour the KECI station after meeting Hatten and her granddaughter one day while they were at the Southgate Mall.

Millburn spoke about how her father, who raised her as a single dad in Philadelphia and all the important lessons he had instilled in her.

"My dad always taught me to treat everyone equally and to always be kind to everyone," she said. "It only takes one person being kind to make a difference."
