Richardson Wins Art Contest

SWAN VALLEY - Swan Valley Elementary has its own resident artist now that fifth grader Rilyn Richardson won second place in the Montana Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division annual aviation art contest for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. More than 250 artists entered the contest in three categories from kindergarten through seniors in high school.

On May 25, as soon as the graduation ceremony ended, it was announced that Richardson won the prize for her drawing of a bush plane, which was entered into a contest with the theme of aviation in Montana.

"Aviation is important to Montana's future and the kids are the future of aviation. The art contest is a fantastic opportunity to get the youth in communities across the state excited about aviation, said Tim Conway, Aeronautics Administrator said in a press release.

Richardson discussed what influenced her decision to draw a bush plane for the competition.

"I've always been interested in bush planes," Richardson said. "And I've always been interested in art. I was surprised that I got it though, it was crazy."

Richardson's mother Melissa said she was surprised at the announcement but not surprised that her daughter had won.

"It's great, this amazing little school," Melissa said. "There's a lot of opportunity for kids to shine, it gives them individuality."
