Reaching Beyond Their Community

SEELEY LAKE - Health Science Academy freshmen students came from Big Sky High School Wednesday, May 16 to help with the sandbagging efforts in Seeley Lake. They filled sandbags at the Seeley Lake 1-Stop and the Missoula County Satellite Office north of town from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Big Sky Assistant Principal and past Seeley-Swan High School teacher Jennifer Courtney in collaboration with the Seeley Lake Fire Department organized the effort. Forty students were chosen from the 70 in the program.

"The Fort group [in Missoula] had so many people and volunteers had to sign waivers and be 18 years old," said Courtney. "It was hard to get the ninth grade students over there."

Not only was it an opportunity for the students to help out with the flood efforts, Courtney said, "They are starting to understand their civic responsibility is bigger than just their Missoula Community."

Students enjoyed the opportunity to get out of class and help Seeley Lake.
