A Tasting Sensation

SWAN VALLEY – From chicken to beef, sweet to spicy, the range of tastes in the 15 chilies in the America Legion Post 63 28th Annual Condon Chili Cook-off made choosing the best quite the challenge. With a three-way tie for third, first and second were a clean sweep. The 2018 Chili Champ Patricia Maurer claimed this year's coveted trophy and $150.

Maurer is from Harrisburg, Pa. and is building a home in the Swan Valley. She loves to cook chili for her family and placed second last year in the cook-off.

"I was determined this year to be first," said Maurer.

Maurer's chili was made with elk and moose meat.

"The meat is really lean, there was no fat when I cooked it," said Maurer. "It's organic, healthy eating."

She used four different beans and four different chilies including Hatch chilies from New Mexico and smoked, dried chilies. Other essential ingredients included chunky tomatoes, onions and green peppers.

"This is great support for the Legion and I'm glad to be a part of it," said Maurer.

This year's second place and $100 went to Lisa Bender. The three way tie for third and the $50 was split between Andrew Anderson, Marie Geisler and Ronda Feucht.

The cook-off is a major fundraiser for the American Legion Post No. 63. Along with judging the chili, attendees were eligible for door prizes, participated in the 50/50 drawing and there was a live auction by Auctioneer Rip Grubaugh.
