Fight Childhood Hunger Week Raises Awareness and Supports Local Food Bank

SEELEY LAKE – Six teams competed in the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament April 22 to close out the Governor's Fight Childhood Hunger Week. Tournament organizer and Seeley Lake Elementary eighth grader Hannah Ayers said during the week $100 was donated and more than 750 food items were collected for the Seeley-Swan Community Food Bank.

Ayers is a member of this year's Governor and First Lady Youth Leadership Council. She was tasked with raising awareness for childhood hunger and organizing the event during Fight Childhood Hunger Week April 17-23.

Food was collected at SLE throughout the week with around 600 food items donated for the local food bank. Many students and staff wore orange on Wednesday. Orange was the theme color chosen by the Leadership Council for "Wear Orange Wednesday" during Fight Childhood Hunger Week. The goal was to help raise awareness for childhood hunger in Montana.

At the Sunday tournament, players and spectators donated $100 and 156 food items to the Food Bank. Too Much Sauce made up of brothers Owen and Sean Mercado and Dakota Wood rose to the top of the six teams in the tournament. They were awarded $60 and a gift certificate to Cold Stone Creamery in Missoula.

"It went really well," said Ayers. "Thanks to everyone who came and participated or came and watched and supported this event."
