Destinations for Education Dessert Night, March 16

SEELEY LAKE – Thirteen Seeley-Swan High School students along with Seeley Lake Elementary Spanish teacher Bridget Laird and SSHS Science teacher Tonya Smith will be traveling to Costa Rica April 4-14 with the Destinations for Education program. The community is invited to participate in their final fundraiser, a Dessert Night at Double Arrow Lodge March 16 at 7 p.m.

Destinations for Education is an opportunity for SSHS students every other year. Students are expected to take turns in leadership roles navigating through the whole trip from making airport connections, to deciding what to tip the taxi drivers and everything in between.

After arriving in San Jose, the students will become tourists for the first few days getting to spend time on the coast and have the opportunity to swim in the Pacific Ocean. They will also visit Manuel Antonia National Park, go zip lining in the jungle and experience international travel basics like ordering food in Spanish and exchanging currency.

The group will then travel by public transportation to the small city of Orosi where they will spend the remainder of their trip. Sara and Toine from Montaña Linda Spanish School have organized the students’ itinerary which includes: daily Spanish classes with homework, a service project; evening activities including a cooking lesson on how to make Costa Rican style empanadas; dance lessons; a tour at a local coffee plantation; hike to a waterfall and if time to a nearby volcano; and a soccer match with local children.

Students will live with host families in pairs or groups of three. They are expected to engage with their host family and speak as much Spanish as possible. The host families either do not speak English or are asked to only speak Spanish.

The desserts will be available for purchase at Dessert Night. Everyone is invited to help support the students in their final push to fund their trip.

Follow the “Destinations for Education” Facebook page for trip updates from the students.
