Students Be-Bopping Christmastime in Potomac

POTOMAC - Wintertime woods with birds, deer, Christmas trees, snowflakes and a snowman framed the stage while hats and tropical leis flew through the air for the annual Holiday Program at Potomac/Greenough Community Center Dec. 20. From third grade's "Winter Walk" skit, the eighth grade's "Let it Snow" and the fifth-graders' movie "Run, Run Rudolph," the audience was entertained. They used the intermission to refresh on Christmas treats and drinks and peruse the auction items.

The students began working on their program ideas after Thanksgiving, taking time in music and PE class to practice.

The students came up with their skits, small group performances and videos by themselves.

"I love letting the students run with their ideas," said Raynee Pace, Potomac music/art teacher. "The students are so good at practicing independently as groups; they really work hard to put on a good show."

More than 140 people filled chairs and bleachers. Pace said she loves how Potomac and the surrounding community come together to celebrate the holidays.

Sixth-grader Lauren Nordberg emceed the event for the second year in a row. She wrote all her own jokes, memorized the order of the program and mixed in Christmas trivia.

Performances began with George Strait's "Christmas Cookies" remixed by the second and third grades. The song began classically but then suddenly students like Zenn Hamilton and David O'Hara got their hip-hop groove on.

First-graders jingled and sang "Jingle Bells" and began "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" but were run off the stage by the kindergarten that finished the song complete with red blinking noses.

Those primary grades re-joined forces for the song "I'll be Home for Christmas."

The fourth grade boys had some 'cold cheeks' in their jeans while the class performed mat exercises and break dancing to "Sleigh Ride Funk" and acting out a skit as the audience laughed. "It is always fun to see the students having fun on stage after working so hard," said Pace.

The four student drummer boys filled the Community Center with beats from "Jingle Bell Rock."

Pace said, "I think the program went great!"
