Blackhawks Fall to Arlee and Soar over Eagles

The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks faced an uphill battle at home with Arlee Dec. 14 and took on Valley Christian on the road Dec. 15.

A rough first quarter against the Arlee Scarlets left the Lady Blackhawks down 11 points. The Ladies put together a rally in the opening minutes of the second quarter, fighting their way back to within a basket of the Scarlets but couldn't keep their momentum up.

The Scarlets pulled back out of reach by the half time buzzer and the Lady Blackhawks spent the rest of the game trailing. The final score was 30-45.

Chloe Robbins and Autumn Morse led the Lady Blackhawks with 8 points each. Morse hit the Ladies' only three pointer. While Terra Bertsch was 100 percent from the free-throw line, the team hit only 5 of 11 attempted.

Also scoring: Bertsch 6, Klaire Kovatch 5 and Ashley Miller 3.

The Boys also faced stiff competition from Arlee. The Warriors are last year's state champs and are undefeated this season, averaging just under 84 points per game.

The Blackhawks struck first and then traded shots with the Warriors in the opening minutes of the game. They held within a couple baskets until the final minutes of the first quarter when the Warriors took off scoring 13 unanswered points. It went downhill from there for the Blackhawks to a final score of 49-98.

Avery Smith led the Blackhawks' effort with 12 points. Smith and Owen Mercado hit the team's only three pointers.

The Blackhawks played a cleaner game than the Warriors committing 12 fouls to Arlee's 19. The Blackhawks sank 15 of 21 free throws. Mercado, Keaton Johnson, Dakota Wood and Cameron Haines were all 100 percent on free throws.

Also scoring: Haines 9, Keaton 8, Hunter Shelmerdine 7, Mercado 7, Wood 4 and Chance Johnson 2.

The next day the Boys and Girls headed to Valley Christian for a conference match up with the Eagles.

The Lady Blackhawks jumped to an early lead, holding the Eagles scoreless while putting up 17 points of their own in the first quarter. The Ladies continued to pound in the baskets through out the game to a final score of 60-24.

The entire bench got playing time and 9 of the 12 put points on the board. Miller and Kovatch led with 12 points each and Morse was just behind with 10 points of her own. The Ladies continued to struggle on free throws, hitting only 3 off 11 attempted.

Also scoring: Lily Mercer 8, Bertsch 8, Robbins 4, Taylor Dillree 3, Bethany Hoag 2 and Jory Towe 1.

In the Boys' game, the Blackhawks built a 13-point lead in the first half. They held on to it through the second half to a final score of 49-36.

Haines was on fire, hitting 5 two pointers and 4 three pointers for a total of 22 points in the game.

Also scoring: Chance Johnson 6, Shelmerdine 6, Smith 5, Keaton Johnson 4, Hunter Sokoloski 4 and Wood 2.

This Week

With Christmas and New Years coming up the Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks have a couple weeks off. The next games will both be away Jan. 5 in Charlo and Jan. 6 in Lincoln.
