Crafting Skills Shine Through

POTOMAC - Expertise in art and crafts, baking, knitting, concrete molding and knife making filled the Potomac/Greenough Community Center Dec. 2 for the Potomac Craft Fair.

The event brought a steady flow of shoppers and lookers throughout the day.

Local crafting friends had talked about putting on a craft fair and together made it a reality. Organizer and Potomac resident Sarah Russell said fellow crafter Lori Coppock crafts with local girls every weekend and one day said they should have a craft show.

"My hopes for the craft fair is mainly to have fun, but ultimately I would like to have this to look forward to every year from now on and find new ideas for making it successful for everyone," said Russell.

More than 17 booths ranged from soaps, themed coasters, holiday decorations, salves, jams, quilt raffles, scrapbooking, jewelry, essential oils, wreaths, knitting, sewing, antler knives and wooden key racks.

Each vendor kept their own earnings and some traveled from out of town. Youth crafter Austin Hand came from Lolo. He made wooden key racks with different animal pictures on them.

Although Russell was challenged to find time to create her own handmade beaded jewelry and host the event, she said help from Coppock, woolens creator Jaimie Black and Brenda McGillen made it possible.

Interior home décor is what Coppock specializes in by using her imagination and just going for it, she said. "I enjoy everything I do." Her table included Christmas items and glass lighted butterfly vases.

McGillen creates faces out of concrete using molds and colors. "It takes me about three days from start to finish," she said. They can be used to decorate houses, gardens and fountains.

Potomac resident Pattie Corkran picks Potomac honeysuckle and arnica in the summers, infuses them and creates salves. She has 10 different fragrances but her favorite is the honeysuckle.

"It was a blast and we had a terrific turnout," said Russell. The goal among the crafters is to make the event a yearly occurrence.
