Building the Community Connection

SEELEY LAKE – Seeley Lake Elementary is looking for adults who are interested in connecting with junior high students on a whole new level. SLE is hosting their third Phlight Club for Seeley Lake and Swan Valley seventh and eighth graders at Camp Paxson Thursday and Friday, Sept. 28-29. They are inviting adults in the community to stop by, check it out and get involved.

Phlight Club is an event where adults and student interact through cooperative learning, trust and teamwork activities. The intent is to build the capacity for youth to identify adults in their lives, called anchors, which create a web of support to keep them from slipping through the cracks.

"We've learned that kids feel more and more disconnected from adults," said SLE Behavior Support Coordinator Angela Harris. "We would like to build those connections back up to help support these kids."

Facilitator Amy McDonald will return again to lead the sessions. Harris said bringing someone in from the outside makes it more special for the students and allows teachers and staff to be fully engaged with the activities.

Students will be bused from SLE and Swan Valley School Thursday morning at 8 a.m. to Camp Paxson. They will stay at Camp Paxson overnight and return to SLE at 12 p.m. Friday. Adults are invited to join the group for the time they have available; for just an hour or the entire time Thursday and Friday. They currently have enough chaperones overnight but are looking for more men to engage during the day.

Harris said that this is not just for parents. She and SLE Counselor Toni Sexton would like to see any adult that enjoys working with students to come, observe and participate. This is a model that they hope to continue every year with the junior high students. They would love to see the community also embrace the model and continue to expand the sphere of influence and connection that adults in the community have on youths' lives.

"It takes a community to raise these kids," said Harris. "We want to create the ability to connect with kids in general."

Also, if there is a local group or organization of adults that would like to serve a meal or meals during the event that would be another way to plug into the experience. They are looking for servers for Thursday lunch and dinner and Friday morning breakfast. All of the food will be provided.

For more information or to get on the list of adults call SLE at 677-2265. Drop-ins during the Club are welcome but they do need a head count for meals if intending to eat with the group.
