Lady Blackhawks Season Underway Despite Smoke

The Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks traveled to Arlee for the first match of the volleyball season Aug. 25. They then headed to Philipsburg for the traditional start of the season tournament on the 26th.

“With all the fire activity and smoke, it has definitely started out as one of our more interesting seasons,” said Lady Blackhawks Head Coach Tammy Lewis.

The team managed to get in their required practices ahead of the Arlee match but the smoke has been limiting the intensity of practices.

“We are making the best of it and look forward to putting together another successful Lady Blackhawks Volleyball season,” said Lewis.

The team has changed a lot since last year with four seniors and one junior graduating. Throw in a pair of unexpected transfers and the team has only four players returning with varsity experience.

Lewis expects some sophomores will be stepping up and welcomes a talented freshman class.

The Lady Blackhawks pushed Arlee to four games 16-25, 25-10, 16-25 and 14-25 but came up short of a victory.

Ashley Miller led the Ladies with 4 aces, 4 kills and 1 stuff block. Autumn Morse also had 4 kills and led with 6 assists. Taylor Dillree and Klaire Kovatch each added a stuff block.

The Lady Blackhawks performed well at the tournament in Philipsburg. They finished second in their pool after defeating Sheridan, Drummond and Valley Christian and falling to St. Regis.

In the afternoon they took on Clark Fork but came up short.

Miller again was on top of the stats. She pounded in 9 kills and 4 aces to go with her 9 assists and 7 digs. Morse and Maddie Hinchey also racked up 7 digs each.

The Ladies head to Charlo Sept. 2 with the JV game starting at 4 p.m.
