Public Comment Sought - Weed Lake Landscape Restoration Project Proposed Action

KALISPELL – The Swan Lake Ranger District is requesting comments on the Weed Lake Landscape Restoration Project Proposal. The project is located approximately 14 miles southeast of Bigfork, Mont. adjacent to, and east of Swan Lake. The project contains approximately 2,100 acres of land within the Flathead National Forest in Flathead and Lake Counties.

The objectives of the project are to reduce the risk or extent of, or increase the resilience to, insect and disease infestations in the Weed Lake Project area; reduce fuel conditions which will allow for safe and effective fire management; restore more natural landscape patterns and processes; enhance public safety within the Swan Lake Campground and Day Use Area and reduce invasive weed populations.

Management activities intended to address these objectives include commercial and non-commercial harvest treatments, prescribed fire, road drainage improvements and invasive weed treatments. The release of the proposed action starts a 30-day comment period for the public to review the document and provide comments to the Forest Service. Detailed scoping information and maps may be accessed on the Flathead National Forest website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/projects/flathead/landmanagement/projects along with further information on how to provide comment.

For more information about the project, please contact Rich Kehr, District Ranger, at the Swan Lake Ranger Station, 406-837-7501.
