Must Consider Long-term Health for the Entire Valley

SEELEY LAKE - The letters last week on what to do about the proposed sewer project have stirred renewed interest from the community. This is wonderful. The more input from residents the better.

Senator Tester just gave the Seeley Lake Sewer District $600,000 which is barely significant considering the overall cost. This will basically finance the political push for the Seeley Lake system and further negate the wishes of most residents. That money could be better spent cleaning up the lakes.

One writer stated that the proposed sewer system would clean up the lake. That is just not the case.

I have been told at least one study has been done to ascertain where the septic/drain field water from our town goes. The results indicated the flow goes south toward Morrell Creek. By then it should be filtered enough to be clean. The septic fields around the lake, which would be affected by a central system, are on closer and in more expensive properties which likely have better containment anyway. At least we hope so.

Apparently the pollution in our lake, as evidenced by the flora growing atop the water, is not generated solely here. Lakes north of us contribute and this should be addressed as well. The project to clean up this string of lakes is monumental and would require cooperation from all the communities. Make no mistake, it can be done.

One would think Senator Tester would be interested in the long-term health for this entire valley rather than one small area where voters have rejected large debt for little gain.

None of this is easy. Let us consider all options and think what’s best for us, our children and Montana.
