Workshops to Explore Estate Planning and More

MISSOULA - Who will receive your property if you pass away without an estate plan? Do you know when wills or trusts have control over property and when they don’t? What financial and legal steps should be taken before a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, related dementias or cognitive impairment?

To find out the answers to these questions and much more, plan to attend one of two free educational programs given by Dr. Marsha Goetting Monday, June 26 at the Missoula Public Library. Dr. Goetting, MSU Extension Family Economics specialist, enhances her presentations by combining her appreciation of Montana wildflowers with her desire to help you remember strategies related to these topics.

The first session, Financial & Legal Decisions Workshop, takes place from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. and is designed to assist family members with a loved one who is having difficulty with finances due to Alzheimer’s, related dementias or cognitive impairment and what alternatives are left after diagnosis. The workshop is free, but please register in advance at: https://estateplanningforalzheimers.eventbrite.com.

In the second workshop, Estate Planning for Everybody, Dr. Goetting explores how you can avoid probate with payable on death designations (PODs), transfer on death registrations (TODs) and other beneficiary designations. She will also highlight the Beneficiary Deed law that allows a Montanan to pass real property to heirs without probate and provide illustrations to demonstrate that how your property is titled impacts who receives it upon your death. This workshop is from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and is also free but requires pre-registration at: https://estateplanningforeverybody.eventbrite.com.

Missoula Aging Services is bringing you these free sessions, which are open to anyone interested in learning about estate planning. If you have questions about either presentation or are unable to register online, please call the Resource Center at MAS at 541-HELP. Both sessions will be in the large conference room at the library.
