Kovatch Breaks Long-standing SLE Discus Record

ALBERTON – Seeley Lake Elementary (SLE) eighth-grader Klaire Kovatch set a new SLE discus record April 20 at the Alberton track meet. She threw 102 feet, 2 inches. That broke Alika Schneiter's record of 87 feet, 1 inch set in 1992.

Kovatch said her goal this season was to break the school discus record. Last year she came within six feet of the record.

"I knew I was capable of throwing farther than it," wrote Kovatch in an email.

She practiced almost every other day on her throw and the footwork. This year she moved from a half spin to a full spin.

"When I released the disc I felt like I was in complete control of the disc's position and my body," wrote Kovatch. "When I watched it fly it had good angle but I was afraid it was going to go out of bounds! When I heard the distance I felt very excited and thrilled because I believe I can still throw even farther."

After putting her name in the school record books and a few more meets before the Meet of Champions, Kovatch hopes to still improve.

"My new goal for the disc is to have consistent throws and beat my record again," wrote Kovatch.

Kovatch is grateful for her father Kal's help with her technique and his encouragement.

"I couldn't have done it without him!" wrote Kovatch.
