Blackhawks Set Personal Records at SSHS Invitational

FRENCHTOWN - The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks hosted athletes from seven Class B and 16 Class C schools at the Seeley-Swan High School Invitational in Frenchtown April 22. The Blackhawks competed earlier in the week at the Big Sky Quad in Missoula.

Five Blackhawks and three Lady Blackhawks set personal records (PR) at Frenchtown and one qualified for state.

Freshman Terra Bertsch reached a new height with a five-foot high jump. The jump earned her a spot at State. In addition to the PR in the high jump, she also shaved a couple hundredths off her 110-meter hurdles time, crossing the finish line in 17.9 seconds.

Logan Maughan set a PR and took first place in the 400-meter with a time of 54.15. Korinne Treser shaved her best 400-meter time down to 1:13.22 and Caleb Maughan ran his fastest 1600-meter, finishing in 5:07.30.

Kara Good and Levi Reinitz set PRs in throwing events. Good added several feet in the discus with a throw of 73-2.5 while Reinitz broke 20 feet in the shot put for the first time.

Good extended her PR in the triple jump as well with a distance of 27-9.5. Hunter Shelmerdine also set a PR in the triple jump, jumping 37-5.5.

The Lady Blackhawks placed third with 54 points at the SSHS Invitational behind Bigfork and Fort Benton while the Boys came in seventh with 35 team points.

Alex Bohlman led the Ladies scoring points off a pair of first places in the 200-meter and javelin. She took second in the high jump and was on both the 4x100 and the 4x400 relay teams.

Alex's 200-meter time of 27.08 is the third fastest Class C statewide. Alex's javelin throw was just a half-inch short of her throw four days earlier at the Big Sky Quad. Her throw of 139-8 at the quad is the farthest in all Class C schools in the state and it's the third farthest throw across all classes in Montana so far this season.

The Lady Blackhawks relay teams put up some great times as well. Madison Hinchey, Andi Bohlman and Lily Mercer joined Alex in the 4x100 for a time of 52.51. Lulu Bohlman, Alex, Andi and Mercer ran the 4x400 in 4:14.22.

Though the Ladies finished third in the 4x100 and second in the 4x400 at the SSHS Invitational, both times were faster than the state-qualifying standard. Their 4x400 time was the fastest in Class C this season.

Logan Maughan led the Boys with his first place in the 400 and a second place in the 1600-meter. Logan's 1600 time of 4:50.46 is the second fastest in Class C this season but still 10 seconds short of the state qualifying standards.

The Boys 4x400 relay team, Maughan, Shelmerdine, Logan Robinson and Dakota Wood, came in second with a time of 3:38.36, just 7 hundredths of a second behind Charlo. Both teams were about three seconds behind the state qualifying time and are the fastest in Class C.

Only three Class C boys, two from Darby and one from Carter County, have beaten the qualifying standards for state in any running events this season.

The Blackhawks next meet is the Belt-Fairfield All-Comers 2, April 27 in Great Falls.
