Blackhawks Face Stiff Competition

CORVALLIS - The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks took on 19 teams ranging from Class C all the way to AA at the Darby/Florence Invitational April 6. The team then headed to the Frenchtown Invitational April 8 and faced competition from nine Class A, seven Class B and seven Class C schools.

The Blackhawks earned 44 team points placing them in fourth at Corvallis while on the girls side, the Lady Blackhawks took fifth with 41.83 points.

Logan Maughan led the Blackhawks placing in three individual events. He took first in the 400-meter, second in the 1600 and sixth in the 800.

Hunter Shelmerdine was about a half second behind Maughan in the 400-meter, taking fourth. He also took fifth in the triple jump.

The Blackhawks relay team came in second in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay races.

Alex Bohlman took home the Lady Blackhawks' lone first place in the javelin while Cera Strumpfer earned the team's only second in the pole vault.

The Lady Blackhawks relay teams came in third in the 4x400 and fourth in the 4x100.

In Frenchtown, the Lady Blackhawks took fourth with 31 team points while the Boys were only able to place in one event for 6 points.

Alex Bohlman led the Ladies placing first in the javelin with a 135 foot, 10 inch throw. That's just four feet short of her school record from last year. Bohlman also placed third in the 100-meter and fourth in the high jump.

Several Ladies set new season records for the team. Lily Mercer had a season record in the 400-meter with a time of 63.92 while Terra Bertsch shaved her 100-meter hurdle time to 17.96. Bohlman's javelin throw and 100-meter time of 13.23 were also season records.

Hunter Shelmerdine and Logan Maughan were the only Boys to place at the meet. They took fourth and fifth respectively in the 400-meter. Shelmerdine's time of 55.12 was a season record for him.

The next meet is the Bigfork Invitational April 15.
