March for Meals Huge Success

SEELEY LAKE – Thanks to the generous support of the community, the Seeley Lake March for Meals campaign raised approximately $2,000 this March. The Seeley Lake Elementary (SLE) Student Council, Seeley Lake Senior Center (Sela Senci) and several individuals helped raise the funds towards the annual deficit of near $5,200 a year incurred by Sela Senci for the Meals on Wheels Program.

SLE Student Council advisor Duane Schlabach said he invited Missoula Aging Services Resource Specialist Linda Howard to speak to the SLE Student Council after she presented to the Seeley Lake Community Council at their March meeting. She gave a presentation to the students who then voted to give $100 towards the campaign.

“The council had a lot of interest in helping financially provide more meals to our homebound seniors. We feel that the overall goal to help seniors in our community get food was achieved,” wrote SLE Council President Klaire Kovatch in an email. “ The Student Council hopes the money we donated will go directly to Seeley’s community.”

Students also took it upon themselves to solicit donations from the community. They presented Howard with a check for $208.

Other fundraising efforts Howard highlighted included: Seeley Lake resident Marilyn Abbott made and distributed collection cans to local businesses and hung posters around town to raise awareness; Andy Christen posted an ad on his website; Howard posted a crowdfunding site and Sela Senci actively solicited donations.

Sela Senci President Boyd Gossard thanked everyone who helped.

“We really appreciate everyone’s support,” said Gossard.

Because of the awareness for the program, Gossard said they have also picked up new volunteer drivers for the Meals on Wheels.

“What an inspiration Seeley Lake volunteer fundraisers are!” exclaimed Kathryn Hungerford, Development Director Missoula Aging Services.
