SLE Wrestlers Come Out on Top

MISSOULA – Seeley Lake Elementary (SLE) brought five wrestlers to their first tournament at Hellgate Elementary in Missoula March 2 for a tournament between SLE, Hellgate and C.S. Porter wrestlers. Three of the wrestlers won both of their matches and one split his matches.

The SLE wrestlers competed against 30 athletes from Hellgate and 40 from C.S. Porter Elementary. This was the first tournament SLE has competed in after starting a wrestling program this February. The team is being coached by Chris Mauldin, Clint Harris and Rob Loveman.

The wrestlers were matched in a three-person round robin with those in their age and weight class. Each wrestled two matches.

Soren Moon, Sean Mercado and Dakota Gonzalez went 2-0 for their matches. Isaac Morse split his 1-1. Fisher Carpenter sent 0-2. Three others who have been practicing with the group went along but chose not to compete.

While Head Coach Mauldin was proud of how well all of the SLE boys did, Carpenter impressed him most.

"I was very impressed by the way Fisher fought through his matches," said Mauldin. "He really listened to the coaches. For me that is better than any pin."

The SLE Wrestling Team returns to Missoula March 9 for their next meet at Washington Middle School.
