Warhawks Close Out Regular Season

SWAN VALLEY – The Swan Valley Warhawks had a busy week travelling to Helmville and Hall and hosting the Avon Elks at home for their last game of the regular season. The A team was won on the road while the B team won their last game of the season against the Elks.

Versus Helmville

The Warhawks traveled to Helmville Thursday evening, Jan. 19 with a bit of an attitude as the Helmville Mustangs has been the only team to beat the Swan Valley "A" team this year.

The action started off quickly with the Warhawks jumping to a 19-1 first quarter lead. They cruised to a 43-22 point win. Good shooting and a stifling, hustling defense kept the Mustangs off their game the entire night.

"It is great to see the balance in scoring and having a game where everyone had a chance to contribute," said Ken Donovan.

Seth Richardson, Rose Mercer and Nick Bedson each scored 8 points with Conner Matthew scoring 7, Kyla Conley adding 6 and Aspen Conley and Kase Anderson each tallying 3.

The Warhawk "B" squad played well but the more experienced Helmville team had the "hot" hand early in the game and ended up with a 34-22 win over the Swan Valley "B" team. Behind the efforts of several "A" team players, the Helmville squad controlled the rebounding and inside shooting.

"There was some measurable improvement with our players," said coach Chris Auchenbach. "Even though we ended up short on the scoreboard, our kids, hustled and scrapped the entire game. We have a great group of very young, very talented players to build the program on and their improvement over the season has been very encouraging."

Kase Anderson led in scoring with 14 points with Christopher Auchenbach netting 4 and Lilly Boyd along with Trista Alexander scored 2 each.

Versus Hall Huskies

The Warhawks traveled to Drummond on Jan. 20 for a rematch with the Hall Huskies.

A good pressure defense and stolen passes gave the "A" squad Warhawks a 14-1 first quarter lead but a determined Hall team stormed back to trail by 3 points at half time.

Some adjustments by the Warhawks produced a 14-point third quarter for a 37-30 third quarter lead.

Once again the Huskies stepped up their pressure and brought the game to within three points when the final buzzer went off for a Warhawk win.

Aspen Conley led the Warhawks in scoring with 10 points followed by 8 points each by Seth Richardson and Nick Bedson. Rose Mercer added 6 while Connor Matthew made 5 points with Kyla Conley tossing in 4. Kinley Moore scored 2 points and as usual, played tough on the boards and anchored a tough defense.

The Warhawk "B" squad had their hands full with a Hall Huskies "B" squad supplemented with players from their "A" squad, giving Hall the 38-13 win.

The more experienced Hall team jumped to an early lead and led at the end of all quarters. The Swan Valley kids played very hard and never gave up trying to overcome the more experienced Hall players. The "B" Squad has been showing great progress through out the season and playing against more experienced players provides valuable experience going in to the future.

Kase Anderson led the team in scoring with 8 points while Christopher Achenbach tossed in 3 and Matthew Cordenas contributed 2.

Versus Avon Elks

The Avon Elks receive a lot of accolades for being the Blackfoot Valley League defending champions from last year so the "A" squad Warhawks were looking for a tough game. After winning the first game against the Avon Elks, they had some idea on what to expect from the team that is much taller and bigger with a lot of eighth grade players.

The local kids jumped out to an early lead but Avon fought back and took advantage of their inside game with the bigger players. At the end of the first quarter the Warhawks led by 2 points and 4 at half time.

The second half brought about several lead changes and a very exciting, "edge of your seat" game until the end. Going in to the last quarter with a 1 point lead, the Warhawks stepped up the game tempo but some passing and ball handling errors caused some costly turnovers. The Elks took advantage of them for a 38-33 win at the final buzzer.

The coaches commented that the kids played with a lot of heart and gave their all. They agreed it was a good learning game in preparation for the League tournament scheduled for Jan. 28 in Drummond.

The Warhawk players, coaches and fans encourage everyone to attend the tournament and cheer the Warhawks on to victory.

Seth Richardson led the scoring against Avon with 12. Rose Mercer added 11 followed by 6 from Nick Bedson. Aspen Conley and Conner Matthew each scored 2.

The Warhawk's "B" squad has spend many hours of practice working on all facets of the game of basketball from the very beginning of the season. Great progress has been shown in practice. They beat the Avon "B" squad 39-27 in their final game. Everyone had an opportunity to play and contribute.

Against Avon, Kase Anderson scored 12 to lead all scorers followed by Christopher Achenbach with 9, Aubrey Matthew added 6, Dante Pinchoto scored 4, while Darby Gleason, Lilly Boyd, Levi Webb, and Matthew Cardenas all tallied 2.

Chris Achenbach and the other coaches were very pleased with the effort in all phases of the game. The scoring was very balanced and there are certainly lots of great prospects ahead for Swan Valley Warhawk basketball program.
