Outdoor Burning by Permit CLOSED Dec. 1

MISSOULA - Dec. 1 marks the closing of outdoor burning by permit in western Montana. While there has been abundant precipitation since October and the welcome snowfall recently, the main consideration for outdoor burning season to close is one of poor air quality.

It is common for strong inversions to set up in the valleys of western Montana during the winter months. If residents were allowed to continue outdoor burning by permit in the winter, adverse air quality conditions would be the likely result.

Since outdoor burning by permit opened March 1, in Missoula County alone, there were more than 12,000 activations of burn permits.

Missoula County Fire Protection Association (MCFPA) would like to thank the citizens of Missoula County for a very safe and productive outdoor burn season. Wet weather, combined with compliance with permit-reporting procedures and responsible burning techniques on the part of permitted burners, made for a quiet fall for wildland fire responders from all agencies.

Thank you all for your support.
