Starting with Nothing and Making it Beautiful

SEELEY LAKE – Darin Smith started Rocky Mtn. Remodeling in Seeley Lake. He has worked in the construction industry for the past 20 years and is now specializing in kitchen and bath remodels and tile work. He looks forward to offering the best quality service for a reasonable price and strives to make his customers happy by standing behind his work 100 percent.

Smith was born and raised in Spokane, Wash. He moved to Stockton, Calif. when he was 16 and has lived there for the past 30 years.

When he got out of the Marine Corps in 1995, he worked odd jobs. While managing a carpet cleaning company, his office was right next to a construction company that was looking for carpenters.

"I got tired of sitting behind a desk and wanted to be outside, so I said 'Hey, I'm ready for a change,'" said Smith.

Smith started out digging ditches and worked his way up. He worked on hundreds of kitchens and bathrooms, building high-end spec houses with the largest one being 24,000 square feet. He also started his own tile and flooring business but closed the doors during the recession.

"I really like taking something from nothing and making it beautiful. Something that someone can enjoy living in and works for them," said Smith.

While working on a job in Napa, Calif., Smith heard about a contractor looking for carpenters in Missoula, Mont. Since he had been looking for a chance to get out of California, he jumped at the opportunity. Within a week, he had moved to Montana.

Smith ran jobs for Jim Schafer with Straightedge Construction out of Missoula. He frequented Seeley Lake to go hunting and fishing and enjoyed the people so last December he moved to Seeley Lake.

"I decided I wanted to do my own thing," said Smith. "The freedom to be able to do the things I want to do, be able to accommodate the customer more than I could working for someone else and [still] have time to go hunting and fishing."

Smith started Rocky Mtn. Remodeling. Smith is a licensed and insured contractor and the sole employee. He subcontracts plumbing and electrical and works with other carpenters when needed. He will take jobs within a 200-mile radius of Seeley Lake.

Smith is capable of meeting his customer's indoor and outdoor construction needs. Along with specializing in remodels, he prefers finish carpentry, flooring and tile work. He also offers roofing, decks and siding, counter tops of all types, appliance installation and installation of custom or boxed cabinets,

"With my 20 years of experience, I've pretty much seen and done everything there is to do in construction," said Smith. "I'm very particular with my installs no matter what it is. I'm into quality and don't cut corners on anything. I would rather have it done right the first time."
