Missoula County Public Schools Board Position, Open May 2017

SEELEY LAKE - Missoula County Public Schools (MCPS) School Board Trustee Debbie Dupree will step down when her term ends in May 2017. Dupree encourages anyone interested in running for the position to attend the MCPS board meeting in Seeley Lake, Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. in the Seeley-Swan High School cafeteria to get a feel for how the board operates.

Dupree has served on the board since 2002 representing the areas of Seeley Lake, Swan Valley, Clinton, Potomac and Sunset. She has been the voice for SSHS. Dupree feels that it would be a disservice to the students and staff of SSHS to not have someone on the board that represents them.

The filing date for the May 2017 elections will be in the spring. The deadline to file was not available at press time.

Salvage of Blowdown Requires Area Closure at Ski Trails

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley Lake Ranger District will be salvaging timber from a blowdown event that occurred in the Auggie project area. To ensure the safety of the contractor and the public, the area will be closed during operations. The closure includes all of the roads and trails within the Auggie Blowdown Timber Sale area which is coincidental with the Seeley Lake Ski and Mountain Bike Trail system. The closure will take effect beginning Oct. 3 through Nov. 1.

Specific questions about the project should be directed to Seeley Lake District Ranger Rachel Feigley at 406-677-3905.

Noxious Weed Treatments in Horseshoe Hills and Salmon Lake Areas

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley Lake Ranger District will be applying herbicide to two large winter range areas to improve elk and deer forage in the Horseshoe Hills and Salmon Lake areas. This project is being done as part of the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program and the Southwest Crown Collaborative. The herbicide will be applied by helicopter using precision GPS tracking during application. Efficacy monitoring will be completed in partnership with the Blackfoot Challenge. Application dates are planned for the week of Oct. 3 – 7 but may be rescheduled as late as Oct. 31 due to weather constraints.

Treatments are designed to increase forage for wildlife and decrease competition from noxious weeds on native plant communities. The Lolo National Forest has successfully implemented aerial application of herbicides on 24 project areas throughout the forest. Late fall applications have proven to have less impacts on native plant species as most species have initiated their dormancy cycle.

The helicopter landing spot will be located along Forest Road 46942, which will close off the Horseshoe Hills area to incoming traffic off of Highway 83. This could impact hunter, hikers and bikers for most of the day during aerial operations. Forest Service personnel will be on site to answer any questions. The Salmon Lake area will be posted to let visitors know of the potential application of herbicide during their visit. Aerial herbicide application is a tool used by the Forest Service to effectively and efficiently control and reduce the spread of noxious weeds.

As a member of the public you may help us reduce the spread of weeds on the Lolo National Forest by minimizing or avoiding travel through noxious weed infested areas; checking your clothing, pets, livestock and bikes for noxious weed seeds and vegetative parts and taking special care not to damage native vegetation or disturb the soil. Certified noxious weed seed free livestock feeds are required on all public lands.

Specific questions about the project should be directed to Seeley Lake District Ranger Rachel Feigley at 406-677-3905.
