Pioneers Setting Up for Season

POTOMAC - Potomac School sports season opened with Pioneers Volleyball. The volleyball team is made up of 13 fifth through eighth grade girls with the fifth and sixth making the B team and the seventh and eighth making the A team. Their first home match was Sept. 14 against the DeSmet Padres. DeSmet defeated Potomac in the first match of the season for both teams.

Coach Kristy Pohlman has set goals for the season that stem from teaching the girls the fundamentals of volleyball. "I believe even at a young age they can gain the skills and knowledge to be even more successful players as they continue through school," Coach Pohlman said.

The Pioneers volleyball players learn every position. Every girl is a setter, server, hitter and passer said coach Pohlman. "At this young of an age I do not introduce the libero position," added the coach. The libero is a defensive position used during indoor volleyball and specializes in serve reception.

Coach Pohlman is teaching the girls to bump, set and spike the ball. That system is incorporated into their team motto of "Bump, Set and Spike."

"I would rather see an attempted setup then just a bunch of passes going over the net," said Coach Pohlman.

Potomac Pioneer number 10 is Emma Richardson. As an eighth grader, it is her last year of playing volleyball for Potomac. Regarding the DeSmet game, Richardson said it was one of the most fun games she had ever played.

"I really liked that one; I am looking forward to the other games," Richardson said. "I think I have gotten a lot better and the whole team has improved this year with their overhand serves." She thinks the practices have been fun and even though the Pioneers did not win the match against DeSmet, Richardson thought her team performed well.

Potomac's next match is at home against Lolo on Sept 27. Coach Pohlman believes that each girl can do every single skill and looks forward to watching the girls learn and gain confidence as they go through the season.

"It is always fun to watch the players bloom in their skills and as a team," said Coach Pohlman.
