SWAN VALLEY – Kaylie Charlton, 24-year-old from the Garnet area near Drummond, Mont., was arrested Aug. 15 on several counts including burglary, assaulting a peace officer and carrying a concealed weapon. Since her arrest, she has also been charged with arson after allegedly igniting a wildland fire on private property and leaving the scene.
According to the report filed by Missoula County Sheriff’s Sergeant Robert Parcell, at about 5:40 a.m. Aug. 15 owner of Photographer’s Formulary Bud Wilson walked from his house to his photography classroom and discovered a female in the break room. She was holding a camera and a bunch of photographs. Wilson took the photographs from her and she dropped the camera. Wilson asked her who she was and what she was doing there. He said she didn’t know where or who she was. Wilson told her to get out of the building and she left.
Wilson reported that items had been torn off the walls and items had been thrown from the counters. He also said that money had been taken from the safe and placed in a black backpack. Upon inspection of the backpack by Sgt. Parcell, he found a Glock pistol, two hunting knives and a stun gun.
Sgt. Parcell learned that the female had used the business phones and left a message on another extension, identifying herself as Kaylie. He was unable to find her on the premise.
Sgt. Parcell later received a call from the Charlton’s father, Aaron, who had located her and agreed to meet with Parcell.
When questioned by Parcell, Charlton admitted to being in Condon earlier that morning, being in a “scary house” where a man came and yelled at her and she believed her black backpack was stolen.
Charlton became agitated and combative when they tried to restrain her. She hit, kicked and tried to bite her father. She also caught Missoula County Deputy Heath Hanson’s right index finger inside the chain between the cuffs and twisted it causing Hanson pain.
Parcell called an ambulance to transport Charlton to Missoula. While attempting to restrain Charlton in the gurney, she spit in Parcell’s face.
At the hospital, the staff discovered a pistol in Charlton’s back pocket. It was determined she was impaired due to the consumption of methamphetamine.
She was booked in the Missoula County Jail, Aug. 15 at 8:45 p.m. She was charged with two felonies, burglary and assault on a peace office. She was also charged with five misdemeanors: assault with a bodily fluid, criminal trespass, carrying concealed weapon, resisting arrest and criminal mischief. She was also charged with theft, her first offense. Charlton was released Aug. 17 at 7:03 p.m.
Following the arrest Sergeant Parcell learned of another incident involving Charlton earlier that morning. According to the report, at 1:30 a.m. Aug. 15 a homeowner on Condon Loop Road near Highway 83 mile marker 46 heard noises on their porch. Upon inspection they found Charlton outside with a bucket and matches. They noticed a fire across the road on their neighbor’s property.
When questioned, Charlton said the fire was hers and was a warning signal. She asked to use the phone. When the homeowner noticed a pistol in her right front pocket they asked her to leave.
The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation responded to the fire later that day. It had grown to around 0.10 of an acre. It was controlled and Charlton will be responsible for the suppression costs.
