Lady Blackhawks Finish Fourth at State

GREAT FALLS - The Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks wrapped up their season, finishing fourth at the State Class C Girls Basketball Tournament March 12.

The Lady Blackhawks got off to a good start when they took down Plentywood in the opening round. Plentywood was the number one team from the Eastern Division and had previously been undefeated.

The victory over Plentywood pitted the Lady Blackhawks against Belt in the semifinal. Belt, the top team from the Northern Division, sent the Ladies to the consolation side of the tournament bracket. Belt went on to the championship game where they defeated Box Elder for the top spot, 63-40.

In their first loser out game, the Lady Blackhawks defeated the number one team from the Southern Division, Broadview/Lavina.

"It would have been very easy to lose [to Broadview] Saturday morning after getting beat Friday night by Belt," said Lady Blackhawks Head Coach Shawn Holmes. "The girls stepped up and played a great game against Broadview."

The victory earned the Ladies a spot in the consolation game.

After losing to the Lady Blackhawks in the opening round, Plentywood worked its way through the losers' bracket. They sent home Absarokee and Arlee setting up a rematch with the Lady Blackhawks for third place.

The Lady Blackhawks couldn't hold off Plentywood in their second meeting. They had to settle for fourth place, giving Plentywood third.

Coach Holmes said he is proud of the team's performance and the efforts each of the girls gave out on the floor.

"I am certainly proud of coming home with a fourth place [from state]," said Holmes.

The loss gives the Lady Blackhawks a final season record of 26-4.

Holmes said he couldn't think of any let downs in the entire season even citing the early season loss to Drummond as "energizing us".

"I'm very proud of all we accomplished this year," said Holmes.

Versus Plentywood - Quarter Final

The Lady Blackhawks faced Plentywood in the opening round of the state tournament March 10.

Plentywood came into the tournament undefeated and put up quite a fight. They extended a narrow lead in the first quarter to a five-point lead over the Lady Blackhawks at the half.

The Lady Blackhawks came out shooting after the break, putting up two points for every one Plentywood scored. By the end of the third the Lady Blackhawks had tied the game at 32-32.

Taking the momentum into the fourth quarter, the Lady Blackhawks pulled ahead. The 45-38 victory earned them a spot in the semifinals.

Paige Holmes led the Lady Blackhawks, scoring 22 points including 4 three-pointers. Holmes also sunk 6 of 7 from the free throw line, helping push the Ladies' free throw shooting average to nearly 75 percent.

Also scoring: Alex Bohlman 8; Delaney Holzworth 3; Stevi Meade 3; Stephanie Robbins 3; Tessa Grimes 2; Cera Strumpfer 2 and Eliana Robinett 2.

Versus Belt

The Lady Blackhawks faced off against Belt in the semifinal March 11. Belt came into the tournament with high expectations being that they have taken the state title three of the last four years.

The Lady Blackhawks fell to a 19-point deficit in the first quarter and were never able to recover. The final score was 25-51 and sent the Lady Blackhawks into the consolation bracket.

The Lady Blackhawks were led by Paige Holmes with just 7 points. Holmes scored the Ladies' only three-pointer.

Also scoring: Alex Bohlman 4; Tessa Grimes 4; Mary Strumpfer 3; Eliana Robinett 2; Cera Strumpfer 2; Marisol Caro 2 and Stevi Meade 1.

Versus Broadview-Lavina

The Lady Blackhawks took on Broadview-Lavina in their first game in the consolation bracket March 12.

The Lady Blackhawks jumped to an early lead in the first quarter and extended it to 7 points by the half. Broadview-Lavina tried to put together a comeback in the third quarter closing in to within three points but the Lady Blackhawks held on.

The Lady Blackhawks finished Broadview-Lavina off in the final frame, outscoring them 14-7 to a final score of 47-34

Paige Holmes sunk 4, three-pointers on her way to 21 game points. Delaney Holzworth followed Holmes with 12 points.

Also scoring: Alex Bohlman 6; Mary Strumpfer 4; Stevi Meade 2 and Cera Strumpfer 2.

Versus Plentywood - Consolation Game

The Lady Blackhawks faced Plentywood for the second time at the tournament in the consolation game March 12.

The Lady Blackhawks took to the court and kept pace with Plentywood though the first half and led by 4 going into the second half.

The game switched in the third quarter. The Lady Blackhawks could do nothing to keep Plentywood from erasing their advantage and running up a sizable lead. The fourth quarter ran a similar course and the Lady Blackhawks fell to Plentywood 25-41.

Paige Holmes led the Lady Blackhawks with 9 points, 6 of those from a pair of three-pointers. Close behind Holmes was Delaney Holzworth with 7 points.

Also scoring: Alex Bohlman 4; Cera Strumpfer 3; Mary Strumpfer 1 and Elizabeth Done 1.
