The 5K and 10 K mass start of nearly 150 skiers at the 2016 West Yellowstone Rendezvous.
Klayton Kovatch, Bridger Stiles of Moran, Wyo. and Dakota Wood of Seeley Lake Nordic Team were recognized for finishing second in their respective age groups.
SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley Lake Nordic Team (SLNT) finished their race season at the 2016 Yellowstone Rendezvous March 5. Other locals that participated in the event included Kim Grover of Seeley Lake, Darren Zellman of Condon and Zia Kloetzel, Tim Swanberg and Madeline Swanberg of Ovando.
Racers participated in the 2-kilometer (K), 5K, 10K, 25K and the 50K races.
In the 2K, Hattie Batchelder 10:33, took third for the girls, 9-11-year-old with a time of 10:33.
SLNT racers that participated in the 5K included Klayton Kovatch 18:03, Dakota Wood 18:50, Cullen Bertsch 19:57, Eric Lorentz 20:36, Ella Batchelder 20:50, Owen Hoag 21:18, Klaire Kovatch 21:24, and Malachi Nicholas 22:02. All but one placed in the top five for their age group out of 49 racers that finished. Klayton took fifth overall in the race.
Madeline Swanberg 37:32, Will Batchelder 38:45, Zia Kloetzel 42:45, and Terra Bertsch 46:35 raced in the 10K. They all placed in the top 10 for their age group out of 89 total racers.
Angus Batchelder was the only local racer in the 25K. Of the 147 racers in the 25K, Angus finished second for the men 18-24 year olds with a time of 1:20:09 and 44th overall.
Tim Swanberg 2:35:39, Darren Zellman 2:43:08 and Kim Grover 3:11:13 competed against 141 skate skiers in the 50K. Swanberg finished 34th overall and sixth in his age group. Zellman came in 48th and seventh in his age group. Grover finished in 100th place overall but took second in her age group.
