Seeley Lake and Potomac Split Wins

The Seeley Lake Elementary (SLE) Eagles boys' basketball team faced off against the Potomac Pioneers on the Eagles' home court Dec. 3. The Pioneers won the first game taking down the Eagles' fifth and sixth-graders by six points. The Eagles' seventh and eighth-graders turned the tables beating the seventh and eighth grade Pioneers by 15 points.

B Team (5th-6th graders)

Taking an early lead, the Pioneers never let go. They were up by five points at the end of the first quarter.

In the second half, shots were not falling for the Eagles. They made only two of their shots. Potomac continued to pad their lead, doubling their score to 16.

The Eagles come out strong closing the gap to five points in the first two minutes of the third quarter. The Pioneers responded to the Eagles basket-for-basket and then continued to pull ahead. The Pioneers were up 11 points at the end of the third quarter.

The Eagles' defense stepped it up in the fourth quarter holding the Pioneers to two points while the offense tried to close the gap. The Eagles came within four points of the win with 30 seconds left on the clock. The Pioneers were able to pull out the win, 29-35.

Kaden Thornsberry was the leading scorer for the Eagles with eight points recorded. Zane Benedict and Garrett Schmill led the Pioneers scoring 14 points and 10 points respectively.

A Team (7th-8th graders)

The seventh and eighth-grader Eagles and Pioneers proved to be a tight match-up in the first quarter. Neither team was ahead by more than a basket. A three-pointer by eighth-grader Dakota Wood pulled the Eagles into the lead, 8-7, at the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles maintained their lead finishing the second half up 6 points with a score of 19-13.

The third quarter was again equally matched with each team putting 10 points on the board.The fourth quarter sealed the game for the Eagles who out-scored the Pioneers two to one, winning with a final score of 46-31.

The top scorers for the Eagles were Wood and Beau Sloan each with 10 points and Owen Mercado and Avery Smith with 9 points each. Potomac's Bridger Hall dominated the court for the Pioneers, making 14 points for the team.

Potomac and SLE met each other again in Potomac Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 4 p.m. SLE will host its annual tournament Dec. 12 starting at 9 a.m.
