Pioneer Volleyball Season Serves Up a Good End

POTOMAC - Potomac girls' volleyball season ended Oct. 24. The team of 12 played hard and set the bar for good playing and a good reputation, according to Potomac Volleyball Coach Grace Perry.

Potomac played 12 volleyball games total this season with their team of 12 athletes. On the A team there were three eighth-graders and four seventh-graders. The B team consisted of fifth and sixth graders with a few of the seventh graders as well.

Coach Perry said starting young members of the team helps them learn teamwork, game basics and fundamentals.

Some of the A team have played volleyball at Potomac since their fifth grade year.

"They [the girls] really help each other during the games and practices," Coach Perry said. There were some new girls this year to the team that had not played volleyball before and their coach was pleased with how they blended into the team and learned so much."

The volleyball team played in the tournament at Frenchtown and went into those games ranked fourth in the Copper League.

In the tournament, the Pioneers played against Frenchtown Elementary with a loss and then won playing Desmet. They lost their final game against Hellgate Elementary. The Pioneers came out fifth overall after the tournament.

"The team of fifth through eighth-graders played hard against other eighth grade-only teams," said Coach Perry. "They went for every ball."

Perry said the girls showed teamwork and good attitudes during the tournaments as well as in every game. The other teams and parents were impressed with the Potomac athletes on how they represented Potomac, according to their coach.

Good parenting and positive attitudes made a difference during practices and games for the Potomac athletes said Coach Perry. "At this level of middle school sports, their attitude and effort makes the difference [when they play]," she said.

Perry enjoys coaching the girls and is very proud of them. "The Potomac Pioneers Volleyball team is a wonderful example of what hard work, a good attitude and teamwork can accomplish."
